Biography
-
Dennis Brutus , born in Salisbury Southern Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe), was a poet and anti-apartheid activist most known for his vocal opposition to South Africa's inclusion in the Olympics. Brutus protested the unfair and racist policies of the South African government in refusing to allow nonwhite athletes to participate in international competitions and called for the global community to boycott South Africa's participation. Brutus co-founded the organization SANROC (South African Non-Racial Olympics Committee) in 1962. Brutus was "banned" from South Africa and imprisoned once in 1963; he was barred from publishing in South Africa and lived in exile until 1990.
