Biography
Born in 1906 in Senegal, Léopold Sédar Senghor was a poet and politician who served as the first president of Senegal following its independence in 1960. Senghor was perhaps the most famous and most influential writer of the negritude movement, and he co-founded the journal "Presence Africaine" with Alione Diop. Senghor was the first African elected as a member of the Académie française.
